With the Reference Series, Pearl sets out make a shell pack where each individual drum is crafted from the woods that will provide that drum with its optimal sound. The Reference Series' 10" tom shell is a 2-ply birch/4-ply maple combination, while the 12" tom shell is entirely maple. For a bigger low frequency response, the 16" tom is a 4-ply mahogany/2-ply maple configuration, and the kick sports 6-ply mahogany/2-ply maple construction. Maple shells with birch or mahogany inner plies and crafted for optimal sound from each drum
Each drum in a shell pack is fundamentally different than the other drums. A tom has a different sound than a kick drum, thus different woods are needed to get the best sound out of each drum. Using maple as a sole material has long been the old school choice for shells and for good reason: maple rocks smooth, well balanced tone that is perfect for a 12" tom. Subsequently, all Reference Series 12" toms are composed of 6 plies of maple — the only single wood shell in the series. Reference Series 10" and 8" toms receive four plies of maple with two inner plies of birch for cut and attack. For max response, all 13" and smaller toms have a rounded 45-degree bearing edge.
Beginning with the 13" tom and larger, mahogany is added to the inner plies to increase the lower frequencies and accentuate the richness of the Maple. The 14" toms and larger begin using Pearl's fully rounded bearing edge for even more shell contact. Pearl's 22" bass drums incorporate six inner plies of Mahogany surrounded by two outer plies of maple for the ultimate in solid responsive bass frequencies.

The Reference Series features Pearl's Superior Shell Technology, a proprietary technique for achieving the ultimate air chamber. It begins with select woods chosen for their one-of-a-kind acoustic attributes, milled to accurate thickness with overlapping scarf joint seams, for a perfect air-tight fit. The wood plies are saturated with Pearl's proprietary "AcoustiGlue" that permeates every pore and dries to the exact consistency of the wood for optimum resonance. Finally, the plies are formed in high-temperature molds with 1000 PSI of hydraulic pressure to produce perfect drum shells that exhibit superior tone, optimal resonance, and extreme strength.
