Don't Show Up Without One... Drive Home if You Do!
As a sound guy, you can get away with a lot of stuff. You can wear shoes without socks, dress in all black, and convince people that you're making the sound better by twiddling knobs that do absolutely nothing. In fact, there are only a few things you can't do, and one of them is take yourself seriously if you don't own a Radial ProAV2. You see, the Radial ProAV2 is your ultimate audio Swiss Army knife. Normally, trying to hook up the unbalanced outputs of a laptop or the consumer-level RCA outputs of a DVD player to a professional sound system is a lot like trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole... blindfolded... with your feet.Even if you do manage to cobble together cheap adapters you get at the TV Hovel or some such place, your impedances will be all wrong and you'll probably end up with a muddy sound accented by a high-frequency screeching noise. The Radial ProAV2 makes it all easy though. It's got transformer isolated parallel inputs for unbalanced 1/4", RCA, and stereo 1/8" connecters and balanced XLR outputs. What's cool about the inputs being parallel is that you can run your sound into one input - say, for example, from the the RCA outputs of a DJ rig. You can then plug in a pair of powered speakers into the ProAV2's parallel 1/4" inputs for monitoring (turning them, effectively, into a second pair of outputs) and hook up the main PA via the XLR outputs.
Plus, the ProAV2 has ground lifts on both the input and output sides, so you can eliminate any nasty buzzing, as well as a -15dB pad for tackling extra loud signals. Computers, CD players, DVD players, iPods, MP3 players, Keyboards, DJ gear, guitars, and cassette decks 9yes, some people still use 'em) - there's pretty much nothing you can't hook up if you've got a ProAV2. Having a ProAV2 on hand can instantly determine the success of failure of a show or presentation and can make you look like a hero. So, if you consider yourself a real sound tech, or hope to someday consider yourself one, then picking up a Radial ProAV2 is one of the smartest and most important things you can do.
