Killer Kick and Tom Mic!
Okay, here's a somewhat awkward question: what's up with all of these kick and tom mics that look like appliances? Seriously, I feel kind of like a moron trying to position a hair dryer inside a kick drum, or finding some way to rig a few electric razors over a set of toms... 'cause it's not exactly like you suffer from an excessive abundance of free space around drum kit or anything. To say nothing of the sound (which, but the way, is absolutely phenomenal) Audix did something majority right when they built the D4. This relatively small kick/tom mic is easy to position and shaped, well... like a mic. A massive 144dB SPL rating lets the D4 handle just about any sound source, and a ber-tight hypercardioid pickup pattern ensures isolation. Plus, this baby's built to last forever. Oh yeah, the Audix D4's not just great on drums - try it on a bass cabinet, and you'll understand.
