While that means C214s have fixed cardioid pickup patterns, it also means that, other than their switchable 20dB pads and low cut filters, they have very little overall circuitry. The result is that C214s are incredibly quiet and have an enormous dynamic range — which makes them awesome for brass and drum overheads, killer close-up miking in general, and invaluable for capturing every last detail of seriously expressive vocalists.
